It had to be different. It had to be short. And it had to be in Frisian. This is how It Dockumer Lokaeltsje unleashed itself upon the world in 1985. They left a trail of happy confusion everywhere they went, with their whimsical, jittery songs about spooks, cows, mummies and trains. They built upon the sound of bands like The Cramps and Shockabilly, yet It Dockumer Lokaeltsje were open to a myriad of different influences: the absurdism of the Neue Deutsche Welle; The musical curiosity of Minutemen; the perennial obstinacy of Wire.

Wil met U neuken, Moddergat, VPRO
In 1986, the band released the successful mini LP “Wil met U neuken”, which received a great deal of airplay. The legendary British deejay John Peel played the record on the BBC and the VPRO programme De Wilde Wereld invited the band to perform an exclusive radio session. In 1987, Moddergat - a double album on a single slice of vinyl – was equally well-received. All the elpees, demos and the radio session were released in 1990 on the cd compilation It Dockumer Totaeltsje.

New stories: Tonger
Even though Van Essen, De Jong and Sijbenga were away from home for a bit, the microcosm that they spawned quietly continued to grow. New characters, some dead and some alive, took up residence in the Frisian ghost village where ‘de Deale’ (the Evil One) is feared and where the village pub stands in the middle of the graveyard, for the sake of convenience.

The imperative to report on these new developments manifested itself in Sytse, Fritz and Peter in the way that thunder announces itself: first a rumble,  to be followed by thunder, lightning and lashings of rain. This is why their new album, released by Makkum Records, is called “Tonger”.
