Hailing from Aarhus, Denmark, Athletic Progression is an instrumental trio rooted in Hip
Hop and Jazz. The band consists of Jonas Cook (Keys), Jonathan J. Ludvigsen (Drums) & Justo Gambula (Bass). While the three young Danes are openly influenced by artists such as Herbie Hancock, Yussef Kamaal, and Flying Lotus, they have a sound completely of their own, instantly recognisable and insanely catchy.
Since making their debut in 2016, the band gone from strength to strength. In 2018, they played Reeperbahn Festival in Hamborg, Pizza Express in London, and Eurosonic in Amsterdam. They made an appearance at the nationally televised Danish Jazz radio station P8ʼs JazzAlive, and played a sold out show at the legendary Copenhagen venue Montmartre, in addition to shows at the Distortion, Strøm and Spot festivals.
What makes the sound of Athletic Progression so special is the interplay of simplicity and complexity. Songs from Athletic Progression are full of superb intervention – from the intricate drums to the captivating synth harmonies. And yet the songs never sound overloaded, complicated or even strained. On the contrary: Athletic Progression understand jazz and hip-hop in a very original sense. Regarding their music, they rely entirely on their feelings.
Athletic Progressionʼs debut EP Dark Smoke was released through the Super Bad Disco
(DK) / HHV Records (DE) in January 2019 - the labelʼs first release since Berlin Zoo in
2017.
